Teaching Methods

When working with students with autism or other developmental disabilities, we focus on the development of language and other foundational skills. We are committed to teaching methods based on scientific research in the field of applied behavior analysis. Our language training is based on B.F. Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior.

We use a wide variety of proven instructional methods based on the principles of ABA. The techniques used will include errorless learning, discrete trial teaching, prompting, prompt-fading, fluency training, and natural environment training. Our programs provide a high level of positive reinforcement to keep learning fun and motivating. We maintain a low teacher to student ratio to ensure ample direct instruction.

Individual educational goals are set for each student and are reviewed and updated quarterly.

Our teachers receive ongoing training in applied behavior analysis, verbal behavior and other proven instructional methods. An educational consultant with background in Exceptional Education provides consultation and training in areas of academic development.

Educational Programs

Intensive Teaching Program:
This program is designed for students that need intensive 1:1 teaching and assistance due to their instructional or behavioral needs. This program is geared to help students learn basic skills that will assist them in their long-term learning. We focus on teaching cooperation, attending skills, basic self-care skills, as well as the following language skills: receptive language, requesting reinforcers(mands), and labeling objects (tacts).

Intermediate Learner Program:
This program is designed for students that need assistance in group and individual settings. The goal is to assist the students in the classroom environment while providing them with the assistance necessary to learn in a group setting. We focus on attending skills, increasing independent work time, preliminary academic learning, and more complex language training. Students in this program are taught using a variety of 1:1 instruction and small group instruction.

Advance Learner Program:
This program is designed to work on language skills, socialization, and academic learning in a small group environment. Our goal is to prepare our students to follow basic classroom instructions with a modified academic curriculum while preparing them to enter into an inclusion setting. We focus on increasing peer socialization, complex language training, and following a classroom routine.

Social Academic Program
Have you often felt that your child may be too “high functioning” for a self contained ESE classroom, yet he or she is “struggling” in a regular education classroom? Then our school may be the option for you. At Interventions Unlimited Academy, we have designed a specific program to help meet the needs of your child. Our social academic program is designed to meet the particular academic and social needs of high functioning students with Autism, ADD, ADHD, and Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD). The program is designed to assist students that have difficulty learning abstract concepts, developing peer relationships, and are easily distracted. We tailor our curriculum to your child’s specific learning styles, while increasing organization and communication skills that will help them excel in life. The students work in small classrooms with a strong focus on academics and social skills. Academics skills are taught at the student’s individual level and pace. Our part time program is geared to teach the students’ specific classes (Reading, Science, History) in a small classroom environment.
